Security firm exposes dangers of so-called “smart” products

A security firm has discovered a vulnerability in Samsung’s ‘Smart’ TVs that allows the devices to be hacked which, if left unpatched, would permit the system’s microphone and camera to used to spy on the viewer.

Similar to an XBox Kinect, the Samsung  ’Smart Hub’ line of televisions allows users to control the television via physical gestures and voice control. A high definition camera is also used by the device to allow Skype calls. The device also includes facial recognition technology. However, these features can also be hijacked to turn the television into a modern day equivalent of George Orwell’s telescreen.

“In an e-mail exchange with Security Ledger, the Malta-based firm said that the previously unknown (“zero day”) hole affects Samsung Smart TVs running the latest version of the company’s Linux-based firmware. It could give an attacker the ability to access any file available on the remote device, as well as external devices (such as USB drives) connected to the TV. And, in a Orwellian twist, the hole could be used to access cameras and microphones attached to the Smart TVs, giving remote attacker the ability to spy on those viewing a compromised set.”

The vulnerability was discovered by ReVuln, who noted that the security hole cannot be patched without voiding the TV’s warranty. In the video above, ReVuln researchers show how easy it is to gain access to the TV’s root files and copy entire contents of the hard drive as well as passwords and social networking information.

ReVuln only agreed to divulge the information to paying subscribers and Samsung did not respond to requests asking for a comment on the issue.

The use of microphones to record conversations is a major privacy issue in the both the public and private sector.

Televisions, computers and cellphones are all currently being upgraded with technology that records conversations in order to bombard users with invasive targeted advertising. Verizon recently followed Google’s lead and officially filed a patent for a set-top box that will actively spy on Americans in their own homes.

App providers on the Android network also now require users to agree to a condition that, “Allows the app to record audio with the microphone,” on cellphones and other ‘smart’ devices. “This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation,” states the text of the agreement.

Virtually every new technological device now being manufactured that is linked to the Internet has the capability to record conversations and send them back to a central hub. Is it really any wonder therefore that former CIA directorDavid Petraeus heralded the arrival of the “smart home” as a boon for “clandestine statecraft”?

Earlier this week it was reported that authorities across the United States are planning to install microphones on buses in order to eavesdrop on passengers. The Intellistreets lighting network, also currently being installed across the country, similarly has the ability to both watch people with video cameras and record their conversations with microphones.

Did TSA Mothball Scanners In PR Stunt?

Metal detectors, x-ray machines out of use in major airports during opt out protest

November 23, 2012

Did the TSA once again mothball its fleet of body scanners and even de-activate metal detectors in an attempt to neutralize the nationwide TSA opt out campaign taking place this week?

Activist Christopher Key traveled to several airports around the country with the intention of deliberately setting off the metal detector and then filming his TSA pat down.

On Friday last week, Key told CBS News of his intention to take part in the Infowars Opt Out and FIlm protest by flying out of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Alabama in order to illustrate how Americans who are willing to give up liberty for security “lose both”.

Before passing through security, Key even took the precaution of filling his pockets with a roll of $10 dollars worth of quarters, a large set of keys, and a camera pen that could have easily been mistaken for a knife.

Intending to film his pat down and then accuse the TSA screener of “sexual assault,” Key passed through the metal detector and was surprised to see that he didn’t set it off. He then returned to security and passed through another metal detector for a second time, also without setting it off despite carrying a large amount of metal on his person.

Either the metal detectors were turned off or they completely failed to detect the metal Key was carrying, a shocking lapse in airport security in either case.

Key also noted that when he began filming TSA screeners they ceased performing full body pat downs.

Key then flew out of Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah and again passed through the metal detector carrying his quarters, keys and pen camera intending to set the device off so he would be asked to undergo a full body scanner or a pat down. For a third time the metal detector failed to go off.

Key then traveled to Dallas where he passed through security at Fort Worth International Airport. As the video below illustrates, when Key asks TSA agents why the full body scanners are not in use, they claim the machines are “broken” but fail to explain why.

With airports already crowded and busy as a result of Thanksgiving travel, in addition to the suggestion that the TSA may have tried to neutralize the national opt out campaign by simply mothballing the main object of the protest – the naked body scanner – as well as deactivating metal detectors to prevent people filming their pat downs – is this another damning illustration of how the TSA is nothing more than security theater?

If the the very device that we are told is vital in stopping terrorists, despite the fact that it hasn’t apprehended one terrorist, can be temporarily dispensed with for political reasons or simply because there are more travelers, then what use is it in the first place?

This wouldn’t be the first time that the TSA has mothballed the naked x-ray scanners for public relations purposes.

During the November 2010 national opt out day protest, reports from travelers at numerous different airports confirmed that the TSA had temporarily mothballed the body scanners in a bid to neutralize the protest. The Gizmodo website was bombarded with Tweets from eyewitnesses about how the machines were roped off or not in use at major airports throughout the country, claims later confirmed by newspaper reports but denied by the TSAitself.

Poll: 35% Of Americans Would Wear “Electric Shock Bracelet” in Order to Fly

Shocking survey result shows how much freedom Americans are willing to sacrifice

Paul Joseph Watson

November 9, 2012

A survey commissioned by Infowars and conducted by Harris Interactive has found that 35% of American adults would be willing to wear an electric shock bracelet in order to fly, another startling example of how many Americans are willing to give up their rights in the name of safety.

The idea of mandating travelers wear an electric shock bracelet sounds like something out of a dystopian sci-fi movie, but the proposal was seriously considered and very nearly implemented by the Department of Homeland Security back in 2008.

As the video above highlights, not only would the bracelets have been used to deliver incapacitating electric shocks to suspected terrorists, they would also have contained tracking technology to spy on the wearer.

American adults participating in the Harris Interactive survey were asked the following question;

In 2008, the Department of Homeland Security expressed an interest in having travelers wear electric shock bracelets that would both track travelers through the airport as well as allow airport officials and flight crews to incapacitate potential terrorists. How willing, if at all, would you be to wear such a bracelet in order to fly?

An astounding 35% of American adults responded that they would be “completely” or “somewhat willing” to wear the shock bracelet. Republicans were more likely to be willing than Democrats, 41% to 34%.

Only a slim majority (52%) said they would be “completely” unwilling or “somewhat unwilling” to wear the shock bracelet. The rest (13%) responded “don’t know”.

The fact that a sizable portion of American adults are willing to wear a device that would allow a TSA agent or other airline official to arbitrarily deliver a paralyzing electric shock similar to a taser gun is a shocking indication of how much freedom and dignity Americans are happy to give up in the name of security.

Given how close the DHS came to actually implementing the plan, one wonders if it is likely to rear its head once more.

In 2008, the Washington Times reported on how DHS official Paul S. Ruwaldt of the Science and Technology Directorate, office of Research and Development, wrote to Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. indicating that the Department of Homeland Security was ready to purchase devices from the company that would be used to deliver incapacitating shocks to airline passengers, all of whom would be mandated to wear the shock bracelet once they checked in for their flight.

In his letter, Ruwaldt also noted how the bracelet could be used as a “method of interrogation,” in other words a torture device. He also raised the prospect of using the device against protesters to allow the temporary “restraint of large numbers of individuals in open area environments by a small number of agents or Law Enforcement Officers.”

The letter stated that the DHS was “interested in…. the immobilizing security bracelet” and that it was “conceivable to envision a use to improve air security, on passenger planes.” Other letters made it clear that the DOD, the CDC, Department of Interior, Department of Agriculture Forestry service, as well as unnamed law enforcement agencies were also keen on acquiring the device.

Following a wave of negative publicity, the DHS pulled the plug on its interest in the electric shock bracelet, and Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. set about removing the letters from Ruwaldt it had previously proudly displayed on its website.

As we reported yesterday, the Harris survey produced several other jaw-dropping results, the most notable being that almost a third of American adults would be willing to submit to a “TSA body cavity search” in order to fly.

Ted Turner: I Think It’s “Good” U.S. Troops are Killing Themselves

CNN founder advocates UN take role as global policeman

During an appearance on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, Ted Turner said he thinks it’s “good” that U.S. soldiers are killing themselves because it shows humanity has evolved a distaste for war.

Asked what he thought about the fact that more American soldiers commit suicide than are killed in combat, host Morgan said it was “shocking,” but Turner responded, “No, I think it’s good.”

Turner went on to argue that it was time for people to start acting “enlightened” and that this was why it was “good” U.S. soldiers are committing suicide in such large numbers because it shows an aversion to war.

At first, Turner smirked and appeared as if he was about to say it’s “terrific” that U.S. soldiers are killing themselves, before using the word “good” instead and adopting a sterner facial expression.

As the New York Times reported earlier this year, U.S. soldiers are killing themselves at a rate of nearly one per day and the figure continues to rise. Reasons for the suicides include the stress caused by such a high number of deployments as well as the horrors troops have witnessed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A recent poll of soldiers who had tried to commit suicide found that the top reason for them attempting to take their own life was “intense emotional distress.”

Turner was also asked by the host who he thought should replace the United States as the world’s policeman, to which he responded, “the United Nations.”

Some have argued that Turner is expressing his satisfaction at U.S. troops killing themselves because it indicates that humanity is starting to spiritually evolve a distaste for war.

However, Turner has repeatedly voiced his wish to see billions of people wiped off the planet via population reduction programs.

Ted Turner’s satisfaction at U.S. troops committing suicide takes on a different context when you understand that Turner is a neo-eugenicist who routinely advocates massive population reduction.

“A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal,” Turner stated in 1996.

In the third world, Turner has contributed a billion dollars to fund population reduction, namely through United Nations programs.

While asserting that the rest of the world should impose China’s brutal one-child policy to ‘save the planet’, Turner himself has 5 children and owns no less than 2 million acres of land. He is the largest private landowner on the planet, falling short of only the royal families of Europe.

Turner’s call for the United Nations to become a dictatorial body under the banner of global peacekeeping is suspect given that the UN itself admitted responsibility for failing to act during the 1994 Rwanda genocide during which 800,000 people were killed.

The United Nations is also riddled with corruption and has tried to impose mass gun control by stealth under the guise of its Small Arms Treaty.

Man Jailed For Collecting Rainwater Begins Sentence

“I’m sacrificing my liberty so we can wake up as a country”

Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
Thursday, August 9, 2012

An Oregon man sent to prison for collecting rainwater on his own property began the first day of his jail sentence with a warning that the American people need to stand up to a government that is operating completely outside the boundaries of common sense unless they wish to see liberty vanish.

After an 11-year battle with the state of Oregon, landowner Gary Harrington was found guilty under a 1925 law and sentenced to spend 30 days in jail for collecting rainwater in three “illegal reservoirs” despite the fact that they are on his property.

After refusing to follow an order to empty the “reservoirs” (which in reality are little more than large ponds), Harrington decided to follow through with the jail sentence as an example to other Americans as to how far the country has slipped from its constitutional values.

Harrington’s case has become a cause célèbre for Americans sick to the back teeth of big government interfering in property rights.

Flanked by protesters gathered outside of the Jackson County (Ore.) Jail, Harrington said he loved his country and was willing to go to jail “to get the truth out and restore freedom and common sense in America.”

Accusing Oregon state officials of failing to uphold their oath of office and pledge of allegiance, Harrington pointed out that citizens did not consent to be governed by those who fail to understand the rights enshrined in the constitution, adding that officials did not take into account the “historically understood” legal right to collect rain water during wet season.

Harrington pointed out that the state had broken their own law by issuing permits to individuals allowing them to divert water from public supplies, whereas Harrington was merely collecting rainwater that fell on his own property and was not taken from municipal supplies.

“Common sense is the basis for common law, without common sense, the law is insane and we did not agree to be governed by insanity or illegality,” said Harrington, adding that throughout American history, citizens have laid their lives down to preserve cherished rights.

“I’m sacrificing my liberty so that we can wake up as a country and stand for our liberty,” said Harrington, adding that his campaign had only just begun.

As we have documented, Harrington’s case is just one of dozens across the country that illustrate how the establishment is using draconian regulatory powers to eviscerate property rights and re-define Americans as de-facto feudal slaves with no inherent rights whatsoever.

This process is being carried out under the umbrella of the United Nations’ Agenda 21 project, which demands that member nations adopt “sustainable development” policies that are little more than a disguise for the reintroduction of neo-feudalism and only serve to reduce living standards and quality of life.

Smartphone Apps Now Use Microphone to Record Your Conversations

Cellphone takes private pictures without your consent

Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
October 15, 2012

Did you know that many of the apps you download to your smartphone now use your microphone to listen to you and your camera to take pictures of you without your confirmation?

New terms of agreement contracts now being attached to app downloads require users to accept that their cellphones become literal monitoring devices that record conversations and surreptitiously take pictures without the user ever giving permission.

It’s been common knowledge for years that app companies and service providers use GPS technology to pinpoint the location of smartphone users.

However, after purchasing a new Samsung Galaxy Note II and proceeding to download a couple of Android apps, one a social networking app and the other a simple calendar, I was shocked to discover that users are mandated to relinquish every aspect of privacy imaginable in order to download the app.

As you can see from the image above, app companies now demand the right to;

– “Record Audio” – “Allows the app to record audio with the microphone. This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation.”

– “Take pictures and videos” – “Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.”

App companies are also requiring you to allow them to approximate your location, send SMS messages from your phone that cost you money, read your contacts, read your phone status and identity, get “full network access” to your communications (in other words listen to your phone calls), modify or delete the contents of your USB storage, and disable your screen lock (the 4 digit code that password-protects your phone).

Since the vast majority of people simply consent to terms of agreement without bothering to read them, this means that potentially millions of smartphone users all over the world have given app companies and by extension service providers permission to record their conversations and take pictures of their private life.

This has been allowed to pass virtually unnoticed with barely any press attention or privacy debate whatsoever.

Since smartphones are dependent on apps, users are being given the option to either not use them and render their expensive device largely redundant, or submit to have their private conversations and personal life catalogued as if they were trapped inside The Truman Show.
